Smoke has been seen pouring from a building at the top of Newcastle Street, Burslem, this afternoon (Friday, 2 October). The building is derelict.

A photo sent to Six Towns Daily at about 3.20pm shows smoke rising from the building with a police car at the scene. The person who sent it said police were diverting traffic in both directions and fire crews were in attendance.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed four fire engines are at the scene and Newcastle Street is closed between Blake Street and Woodbank Street. People are being asked to avoid the area, and anyone living nearby should keep their windows and doors closed. Staffordshire Police has not yet said what caused the fire or whether anyone has been hurt.

Drivers are being advised to avoid the area and find another route while emergency services deal with the incident.
